"ACADEMIA WITHOUT WALLS"
"The next Paradigm does not deny materialism. It simply says consciousness came first."
"My challenge to my fellow physicians: Take the stethoscopes out of our ears and start to listen to our patients about their spiritual visions at the time of dying. These experiences have the power to heal, but only if we validate them, respect them, and start to incorporate their meaning into our hospices and intensive care units. It's not just about a touchy feely way to die. Listening up to the message that it's not scary to die could save the United States 6 Billion dollars a year. (The cost of irrational end-of life health care that does not prolong life one second) Melvin L Morse MD
In this NBC News Special on Dr Morse's research, he is described as "doing more to prove the existence of life after death than any other scientist". Special features discussions with him and videos of the children in his studies describing their near death experiences
Well it's pretty ragged and in black and white. But its the only copy of my appearance on Oprah that I could find, and many have asked to see this. Oprah tells me I am her favorite Pediatrician! I appear to promote the book Closer to the Light
Short clip in which I share with Oprah there is no reason to be afraid to die. Again black and white, and ragged. If you have a better copy, let me know.
Often my fellow scientists who are unfamiliar with the length of my involvement in this research will assume I started off with a spiritual or religious outlook and then molded the data to fit my spiritual beliefs.
I love these early videos as they clearly show that I started with a neurobiological approach and then gained a spiritual perspective as I started to understand the implications of the neuroscience of spirituality.
This is an outstanding KIRO News Special on Near Death Experiences featuring both Kim Clark Sharp and myself.
Also, there is a great shot of my bright red Volkswagen convertible! I loved that car. I lived in Maple Valley Washington on a small horse ranch at the time of shooting this News Special. My now teenage children Cody, Brett, and Michaela are featured.

Yes the rumors are true! I unleashed Dannion Brinkley on an unsuspecting world and near death experience discussions have never been the same. I love you Dannion. This was his first show, Larry King asked me if I knew anyone who had a near death experience who wanted to be on the show. I asked Raymond Moody if he had any ideas, and the rest is talk show history. Dannion is a great supporter of Hospice Care and a great guy.
I have had so many documentaries done on my research, I haven't kept track of them all. But this one is great! I just can't remember who produced it. I happen to love this documentary because I am examining my daughter Michaela Morse in the show.
Around Arlington was a local community program hosted by Cheryl Mathes. This is one of my very favorite interviews. She asks all the great questions in a straightforward and amazed way: (with horror on her face) Do you have to be at Death's Door to have this experience? or Are the children just making all this up?, or Is this light God?
I have been interviewed by Hugh Downs, Stone Phillips, Oprah, Phil Donnahue, Geraldo, among many others, and I liked this interview the best. Cheryl, if you are out there somewhere, I say "Bravo"!
We talked about everything, the reaction of my colleagues at a time this was not a popular research topic in medicine, my theories on how the brain connects to "God", and of course, the stories and drawings of the children's experiences. (26 minutes long)
This was one of the most fun talk shows I have ever been on. They talked about everything from astral sex to whether or not children go to hell. The guests have compelling stories as well.
Spencer Tracy, of Good Morning America, shared with me at this television appearance that he realized that he must have had a near death experience! After hearing me describe the children's experiences.
At the time, I was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington. I was used to medical students having to listen to me drone on and on as much as I wanted. So I was discombobulated when the Producer of GMA enthusiastically gushed: "You have three whole minutes!" Instead of being thrilled as I should have been, all I could think was "my entire research in THREE STINKING MINUTES?"
Joan Rivers was lots of fun. She asked her own questions, rare in television. The rest of them work from cue cards or the ear piece. Joan Rivers had a writer standing by who wrote on a white board out of camera view.
I include a bonus interview with one of the children, spliced in the middle of it all, as Joan never interviewed the children.
Sleeping Giant Productions did a 10 part series on Life After Death following Tom Harpur's astonishing book of the same title. Harpur wrote his book in 1996 and there has been nothing as excellent since (except my books haha) This is the segment of children's near death experiences.

A wide ranging discussion of near death experiences, spirituality, and the need to integrate our spiritual understandings of what happens when we die, with Hospice and end of life care.
"This is the spiritual reality! Why wait until you die to learn the lessons of the near death experience?" Melvin L Morse MD

The same area of the brain that is associated with trauma is the same area of the brain that is our connection to a "god".
It seems that we have the capacity to heal trauma by understanding the neuroscience of connecting with the divine.
As you watch these videos, you can see the my evolution from Neuroscientist preoccupied with how the brain can produce spiritual understandings, to the insights of "ah ah" we are linked by our brains to "god" and the Universe.
I want to share this with all of you as I started as a Johns Hopkins trained physician with two years of post-doctoral work in Neuroscience at the University of Washington. I did not have any particular religious or spiritual beliefs when I started this research. I believed that when you die, you die.
It was through my understanding of the neuroscience of the brain that I arrived at the greater spiritual understanding that consciousness must come first and that our brain is a tool our conscious self uses to interact with this reality.
Recently (January 2011) I was on a National Talk Radio Show, and a caller stated that they heard I was a Fundamentalist Christian and that I was using children's near death experiences to promote my religious and spiritual belief systems.
On this page are over 20 years of videos and documentaries of my work and you can see for yourself my evolution from atheistic scientist to Spiritual Neuroscientist of the new scientific paradigm.
